Thinking about becoming a Childminder?

Want to be a childminder ?

I've just come across this comprehensive run down of information that anyone with a thought to becoming a Chilminder should find interesting ...

CHILDMINDING ~ from LearnDirect-advice.co.uk

OFSTED also have this PDF Guide to Childminding to help advise.

Once you've read all that and want to know what the next step is visit.....

Childcarelink.gov.uk
  • Click your area of the country
  • Then Click your district.
  • You should find the Contact telephone number of the Children's Information Service for your area.
  • Drop them an email or ring to find out when the next Childminder Pre-Registration session is going to be held.
  • Don't forget to ask about applying for 'The Childminder Startup Fund' ing scheme !!
HERE .....
You can read the 'full daycare' ~ NATIONAL STANDARDS
AND
An additional set of Guidance for Day Care & Childminding ~ these should be read alongside the above full daycare national standards
(why they don't just rewrite/update the standards is beyond me .. would save a heap of cross referencing & time ~ imo of course !!!)

You can Choose to download a Word.doc or PDF file.
  • At the Pre-Registration session - you will be given an Application form to fill out and post back to ofsted (OFfice for STandards in EDucation)
  • OFSTED will send you details of how to apply for a 'Disclosure' from the Criminal Records Bureau ~ this will be for yourself and for anyone else aged 16 or over who lives in your home.
  • You will be required to take the ICP (Introduction to Childcare Practice) course and a First aid course within the first 6 months of registering.
  • The OFSTED Registration fee is currently £14 and once paid, your Childminding Certificate will be sent and you can begin enrolling children
BIRTH TO THREE MATTERS

Order the Birth To Three Matters framework from this page of SURESTART.gov.uk

In our area you have to complete the ICP and first aid course before you are registered, the early years team give out the application forms halfway through the ICP. Although this seemed a bit harsh at the time it did mean that you were prepared for your initial registration inspection visit.

It's not the ICP course now.

You must now do the FIRST UNIT of the diploma course "Home-based Childcare" (Cache level 3)

If you wish you can then go on to do the whole of the diploma.
