Default CYP 3.7 Social and Medical model

Hi

I had this assignment assessed and all okay, except she wants me to look at the social and medical model more (I have loads, but not quite understanding it, obviously! )

There are 3 scenarios as below and what I wrote under each in bold

‘If he’s in a wheelchair, I’m sorry we will not be able to take him to the farm visit, we are going in staff cars and we just can’t do it!’

Social model
They should make provisions so that a vehicle is available for the carriage of the wheelchair, which would enable the person to go to the farm.

‘All staff have learnt ‘makaton’ so that we will be able to find the best way of communicating with Jane, don’t worry!’

Social model
Staff have learnt makaton in an attempt to communicate with Jane, therefore providing further options of communication. Although Jane’s chosen method of communication should be the preferred method, from this statement it seems that they are trying to establish the best way to communicate. If makaton doesn’t work they could try pictoral aids, PECs, computer based aids, or any other way in attempts to find the best way.

‘I’m sorry but our staff don’t have the training to administer the medication so we will be unable to give your child a place at the nursery!’

Social Model
The service should have someone trained up to administer the medication and cater for the child.

I was thinking that the middle one may come under the medical model too. Any help, views, explanations or pointers would be appreciated. I need to resubmit by Friday

Hi, the medical model would see the wheelchair as the barrier/problem to travelling in the vehicles and would prefer to have the user board the bus/car as other able bodied passengers would be expected to.

The medical model would have Jane using hearing aids so that she is possibly more able to comminicate in the same way as those without a hearing impairement.

Th medical model sees that the child is in need of medication for a condition that is theirs alone to deal with. There would be an aim towards 'curing' the condition regardless of what it is so that the child can attend settings in the same way as unaffected children.

Best wishes

Thank you ever so much,
I think I got the jist of the statements wrong, as in I wrote what should happen, not what they were....if you know what I mean.

Makes sense now. I have also read link, and done some more research.
