Hi,

This pdf from surestart is a good read - All about… Anti Discriminatory Practice By Mary Dickins, training development manager for the National Early Years Network, London

Anit discriminatory practice is about not judging or making assumptions, promoting and protecting - the Children and the views of everyone involved in the setting. Where discrimination exists helping to broaden their or the overall understanding is one way to help integrate it into practice and relationships.

Quote:
Anti-discriminatory practice can be defined as an approach to working with young children that promotes:

Diversity and the valuing of all differenced A setting whose practice is antidiscriminatory will celebrate and value differences in identities, cultures, religions, abilities and social practices.

Self-esteem and positive group identity
A setting will recognise the impact of discrimination, the social inequalities and their effect on young children and their families. Such a setting will identify and remove practices and procedures that discriminate.

Fulfilment of individual potential
A setting will value children and adults for their individuality and ensure a sense of belonging that promotes self-esteem. It will respect where children come from, what they achieve and what they bring to the learning situation.

The full participation of all groups in society
A setting will appreciate the importance of what is learned and what can be unlearned in the early years and recognise the wider aim of early education to lay the foundations of a more just and equitable society.

Hi, it can help if you look at what anti discriminatory means to you personally.

How you feel about that and then how you think your group/setting feels about it .. sometimes this can help separate your personal thoughts and professional approach - where, although you may have very specific views on something these are held back when dealing with a situation professionally.
Are there things that you'd change in your setting to make it more inclusive - less discriminate, what are they and how would you make the changes.

Anti discriminatory practice can be so many things that it's more of a whole way of doing things - can you think of any experiences that you've come across and thought are nice - anti discriminatory: parent & toddler car parking spaces? what are they and why were they put there.

Floor markings in some places that enable you to get where you're going.

If you apply some of these ideas to Preschool you can look at low level tables, chairs, washing and hand drying facilities or easy safe access to these - why this might be necessary and how they are anti discriminatory.

Bringing in a special occasion food or other items help to raise everyones knowledge of the event, its history and reason for celebration - why this can be anti discriminatory, in that it helps everyone to learn about the event, form their own and group opinion on it and understand why it might be important to some and not so much to others.

Hope this helps a little more, is your placement with preschoolers ?
