Coffee Introduction of the Children and Young Persons Bill

On 14 November the Government introduced the Children and Young Persons Bill into the House of Lords. This builds on the widespread support for work to improve the lives of children and young people in care, including raising their attainment. The bill provides the legislative framework for the white paper 'Care Matters: Time for Change'. Subject to parliamentary approval all schools will be required to appoint 'designated teachers' for children in care and local authorities will have to place greater importance on supporting the education of those in care. Working together, schools and local authorities have a key role in improving the education of this vulnerable group of children and young people.
