Case study 2 – Jennifer is 9 months old, lives at home with mother and until recently their father and her two older siblings, Paul aged 4 years 2 months and Samantha aged 6 years 7 months. Jennifer attends Bouncing Bears Day nursery and after school club which is a city centre private day nursery. Jennifer’s been attending since she was 6 months old. Both Paul and Samantha attend the after school club. They all attend Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Mum informed you 3 months ago that Dad had left the family home, and would be collecting the children on a Monday evening. This is often inconsistent and on the days that Dad does not collect, Mum or Grandma do.
Over the last few weeks you have noticed that Jennifer is looking untidy, occasionally arriving in dirty clothes, her nappy often needs changing immediately due to being very wet, her hair is looking knotted, and there is often a strong smell of urine. You haven’t noticed any change in Paul or Samantha.

case study 3 - William is coming up to 3 years old and has just begun attending the School House Day nursery which is a small setting in a rural community. He has been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). His parents have been very proactive with his care so far and has worked with various doctors etc. to get the correct diagnosis.
William displays extremely challenging behaviour as soon as he arrives and begins to disrupt what had been a very calm and supportive learning environment in the preschool room. The staff begin to feel negatively to William as they find a lot of their time taken up with dealing with the other children’s reaction to his behaviour. They have also noticed that some of the older boys are copying his behaviour. He is disruptive, loud, screams if he is not allowed to do as he wants, he is physically aggressive, destroys his own and other children’s creations, knocks down towers etc., scribbles on others drawings, swipes games and jigsaws off of tables etc. He also hits, bites and trips other children up, tending to pick on the children who will make the most noise. Other parents are becoming concerned that his behaviour is upsetting and disturbing their children and some children are saying that they don’t want to come any more.
