Hi, Diabetes is a good choice. The effects of this disease affects different areas of planning and a child's development. To support a child with diabetes you would need to consider the food and drink options in the setting, work closely with the child's parents/carers so that information is always as up to date. What to do if the child spends time in hospita and if the setting is expected to administer medication.

Page 14/15 of this EYE handbook looks at Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease caused by the body not being able to produce the hormone insulin. Insuilin is important becasue, when food is digested, it is turned into glucose. The job of insulin is to help convert the glucose into energy, which can then be used by cells. If there is insufficient insulin, the body starts to shut down. In contrast, if there is too muc h insulin, organs in the body can become damaged. It is therefore a serious medical condition. There are two types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes
is an inhgerited condition and is the one that you are most likely to come across in very young children. People with type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin and so injections of insulin are given usually before meal times.

Type 2 diabetes
used to be associated with older people who were overweight, but it has become more common in younger people. Type 2 diabetes can often be managed by diet alone.

Where a child has been diagnosed with diabeted you should make sure that you know about their diet and also the timings of their meals. It is important that children with diabeted have regular meals and snacks.
