Hi Natalie

we do both within our setting we plan around a child's interest and have themes/topics, we have just finished transport which we had for 2 weeks, we now have 2 weeks of shapes and then 2 weeks of colours they are all in the eyfs areas of developmant but we also plan around a child's interests e.g there is enough room that we add to the planning and sometimes take things away, so this is on going for the all weeks, for instance the planning might be colours but if a child interests are trains, we have sorting vehicles (a variety of colours that includes trains) we have a train colour game and we might put coloured bricks with the duplo trainset so we plan around the child's interest but we also incorporate the topic/theme of colours.

Hope it helps you

Lynne
