How about introducing some really descriptive language to the children about taste and touch. With the prickly outside and pointed leaves you could bring in some fun words here.

Perhaps ask the children where they think pineapples grow and how that climate is different to our own. How do they think pineapples are picked (harvested)? In some countries people shin up the trees to gather them - that should take their interest!

All the best with your assessment

Ooops sorry its coconuts where they shin up trees but there are some good pictures of pineapple harvests online.

talk about where it grows (ie which country, is it hot or cold there?) Pineapples actually grow in the ground.
Ask the children do they think it will be HEAVY or LIGHT to carry. Have they seen one before. if so where?
Once you open it ask the children what they think it will feel like now?
Ask about the smell? Take a tin of pineapple too to talk about how its different when it is fresh.
Ask if they think its healthy food?
Hope this gives you some pointers??? Good luck
