CYP 3.7 CYPW handbook pages 186-189. If you search inside the amazon preview for the phrase '
personal choices' click to page 187 (189 in the actual book if you have it) where you can read about personal choices and how settings provide opportunities to support children's own choice. If you scroll up to page 186 there's a table that looks at the social, economic and cultural factors that affect children's lives.
Personal choices and experiences
p.188 To ensure that children have the best outcomes there is evidence to show that they need to share in determining their future and should be given a voice to make choices and contribute to their experiences. In order that all children's services reflect the needs of the children in your care, they need to participate in these services.
In early years children can be given personal choices in their environment. The EYFS clearly states that a curriculum for children aged under 5 years should be a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities; an enviroment needs to be rich in resources and displayed in such a way that the children can determine their own play. Children can be involved in observation (looking at, exploring and using language to describe what is going on), setting their own expectations of behaviour and goal setting. The experiences provided will contribute towards each child's outcomes.
Personal choices include decisions about what to eat, drink, dental care, toys to play with, as children grow personal choices involve addictive substances, sexual health and relationships.
p.189 Ways to involve children in making positive contributions to their envirnment- develop childrne's communication skills
- support children's rights
- ensure choices are truly democratic
- promote children's protection by ensuring their concerns are listened to
- make children and young people feel valued and respected by involving them in decision making
- improve services by taking children and young people's views into account
- ensure legal responsibilities are upheld
Hope this helps xx
