Hi, speech, language and communication needs are what individuals have so that it's possible for self expression, interaction with others and for taking part in dififferent learning opportunities as prefered.

The EYMP 5 unit will help

Supporting the needs of all children on talking point & materials for EYMP5 are good reading.

There are also chapters for this unit in the learner handbooks if you have access to one - on amazon.co.uk

Hth xx

Communication:

A two way process of sharing information , news and ideas. Communication connects people and is a key function in life.

Communication is a way of sending, sharing and expressing a person’s thoughts feelings and emotions.

Communication is made through many methods , speaking , writing , signing or gestures and body language.

Language:

The word ‘language’ is used to describe the process of speaking and listening. ‘language’ is what makes us different from animals. Animals and humans can communicate through a variety of signs, body language and gesturers.

Humans use language as a recognised system of structured gestures, signs and symbols

Speech:

Speech is the ‘verbal’ form of communication , the spoken ‘language’ using oral communication. The act of speaking is the articulation of words to express a persons emotions, ideas, feelings and thoughts

Speech, Language and Communication Needs:

Speech, language and communication are important and essential for a person’s overall development in life. We often take these skills for granted, but many children struggle to communicate. They have speech, language and communication needs or SLCN.

A child with speech, language and communication needs:

Might have speech that is difficult to understand
They might struggle to say words or sentences
They may not understand words that are being used, or the instructions they hear
They may have difficulties knowing how to talk and listen to others in a conversation

Children may have just some or all of these difficulties; they are all very different.

Speech, language and communication are crucial for reading, learning in school, for socialising and making friends, and for understanding and controlling emotions or feelings.

Speech, language and communication underpin everything we do – making our needs known, expressing our likes and dislikes, interacting with others and building relationships
