Just to add, I think I know why a referral would be made i.e. to seek support from an agency which specialises in a certain department the child needs additional help in eg a child with delayed speech may be referred to a speech therapist.

How would this be done?
Well somewhere else it asked generally how a referral is made and I said through the parents visiting the gp and outlining te problem, gp then makes the referral- so does the same rule apply here, setting ask parents to make the referral through the gp, of course is the parent wills!
I suppose for safeguarding issues parents will not be contacted an referral made immediately....

Am i on right lines or no:s?

nursery can make referrals to speech therapists, in our area we have drop in sessions that we inform the parents, they take their child just to have quick assessment done and it will be taken from there. You can also contact SEN co-ordinator on behalf of the parent, if there is a problem with their learning needs. They might get seen quicker if it is done through the setting than the parent then going to their HV or GP, as they might need to contact the setting any way so that they can look up the child's learning journal. Your setting should be in contact with the local health visitors, social workers, SEN co-ordinators, and so on.

Hi
In our area west sussex the main point of a referral is made through The First Visiting team, here is the website that you can download a leaflet that might help you with this question

Not sure if it will help you if you are not in the West Sussex area but if not Speak to your SENCO/INCO and ask her how a referral is made. One of the main points is that you cannot make a referral if a parent does not give permission for you to do this. When making a referral this is one of the first questions that are asked.
