to be blunt at level 4 you should be more than knowledgable and able to write a complete essay on not only a planning cycle but all the theories they encompass!! the K are NOT questions they are knowledge you should be able to clearly demonstrate to your assessor so if you have no clue and are in a senior position you need to do some heavy research and learning. i would be horrified if any of my level 4s claimed not to know this!

I am not in a senior position. I am a key worker. but have gone from doing N.N.E.B qualifications in 1988, then being at home raising a family and now back into a compleltly different world of child care .... things have changed Vastly.
maybe bluntly is not the way to go sometimes.

Why are you doing a level 4?
As it is considered to be for senior practitioners.
It's a long time to be away from a sector, to go straight onto do a level 4.
Conditions and curriculums have changed more than once since you left the sector and it was a very basic and easy thing you did not understand.

Whoever I employ, (whatever their qualification) I wouldn't expect someone to do a level 4 because of a qualification they gained over two decades ago. It wouldn't be fair on them, the setting or the children.

It might have been kinder for you to do a level 3 for you to come up to speed on today's philosophy and practice. I hope you have had some say in the matter, as you say yourself, things have changed vastly and I hope that you are not just having to fill in the 'level 4 slot' in your setting.

That hit's the nail on the head. Many enquiries from new and existing learners will be guided by the information they're given. It's the acutely public nature of forums such as here that enable unfair perspectives of the issue.

no, Im not filling in the level 4 slot ...one of my colleagues is half way through a foundation degree.
maybe in reflecting after the matter it would have been easierto do a level three, but Im now well into level 4 and have found this course ok to do so far. It's just the occasional question/information comes up which I dont know the answer to or know what it is. Thats why I looked for a forum/ somewhere helpful.

Yes, everyone is being encouraged to 'upskill' and whilst I am lucky enough to have another EYP (as well as myself) in the setting, I personally have always preferred my staff (when first coming into the sector) to attend lots of courses, workshops, meetings and in-house training before doing NVQ's. They (and me) have found that they are much more confident and knowledgeable by not rushing in.

That said, you are already in 'the thick of it' so I hope your colleagues are supporting and helping you - especially your colleague doing a Foundation degree who should be sharing her knowledge with you. And of course there are forums such as Silksteps who are very helpful for when your colleagues aren't around and you are doing your work in the wee small hours!
