Help SOS Struggling to fit pcs and knowledge into the age group of children that I work with

306k19
The importance of protecting children during care routines and ensuring they are not subject to abuse or exploitation at any time they are present in the setting.

307.2 pc 9
Encourage children's independence in feeding routines, according to family requirements and practice.

These seem pretty straightforward for nursery age children, but I work with primary school age children (5-11) and I need to link them into my own practice.

Also I think the 'according to family requirments and practice' bit is throwing me off too.
A little help please? :)

Encourage children's independence in feeding routines.................
At my school, every morning, the children are asked what lunch they are having eg packed lunch or school dinners. The children who have packed lunch have to put their lunchboxes on the lunchbox trolley.

The children have snack time (this is fruit and encourages them to make healthy choices) and biscuit time, and helpers are chosen every day to give these out.

At lunchtime, the children have to raise their hands when they have finished eating, and then the dinner lady can check they have eaten enough so then they can go out to play.

...........according to family requirements and practice
do the children have any allergies eg nuts, wheat, gluten, dairy?
do their family want them to have a special diet eg vegetarian, vegan?
Have any of the children have special diets because of their religion? eg halal meat, no pork etc....
Making sure that the children eat a healthy and varied diet according to best practice eg no sweets or chocolate bars in their lunchboxes, healthy snack choices

Hope this helps.........

The importance of protecting children during care routines and ensuring they are not subject to abuse or exploitation at any time they are present in the setting.

This is to do with all staff getting a CRB check to ensure that they are suitable people to work with children. Volunteers who are not CRB checked should not be left alone with children. Staff should act professionally towards children at all times, not be too friendly towards them, offer them lifts home etc Staff should not touch children inappropriately. Staff should not bully children or humiliate them in front of their peers.

When children are getting changed for P.E. they should be encouraged to do this independently, also when they are going to the toilet! If a child has an "accident" a fresh set of clothes can be provided, but the child must get themselves changed. Children should be encouraged to practice good personal hygiene eg washing their hands!

A first aider should be present during playtimes, on school trips, in fact at any time during school hours to give assistance when a child is injured or becomes ill. If a child has to take medication eg for ADHD or asthma, arrangements should be made between the school and parents/carers to ensure this happens regularly and appropriately.

Any snacks provided by the school should be healthy eg fruit or digestive biscuits to encourage the children to make healthy choices, but staff also need to take into account any allergies or dietry requirements children may have.

.............again, hope this helps!.......
