hi lauren,

I hope it will help you

K3D313: children need to develop a sense of agency. Agency is control over our life. It is about being able to do things for ourselves and setting our own challenges. Trying out new activity and then achieving it gives children a sense of satisfaction. They learn that they can do and that they can be responsible for what they achieve. We have a vital role in helping children to develop a sense of agency or the can do mentality. Children need assistance to develop the self-help skills that they use every day. This is a gradual process but we can encourage children to do more for themselves. We need to provide opportunities for children to try out new things. It can be anything for example; cooking, rock climbing, painting.. ıf children try more things they can find out their interests and strengths. Some children can quickly learn that they dont like trying out new things. Maybe they have lack confidence or are worried about not doing well. It is important therefore to plan activities in such a way that children begin by being successful. small successes can lead to greater things, while early failure can stop children in their tracks and worse still teach them that they do not like trying out newthings. We should encourage children to enjoy the trying out rather than focus on how well a child does.
