Outcome 3.3
Analyse the potential tensions between maintaining confidentiality with the need to disclose information in the following areas:
a) Where abuse of a child or young person is suspected
b) When it is suspected that a crime has been or may be committed.
This is my answer to part a.
Could somebody please tell me if I am on the right lines and also give me some ideas for part b. Thanks : )
If an adult suspects that a child is being abused they must decide whether their suspicions are serious enough to breach confidentiality. If the adult decides that it is serious enough they must follow the correct procedures and speak to the safeguarding officer immediately. They must never promise a child that they will keep it a secret however they can tell the child that by telling somebody, they can help them. There may be potential tensions when disclosing information as the child may feel you are betraying them. They may feel like they no longer trust the practitioner because they have told somebody else their secret and may be worried that the abuser will tell them off for telling somebody else. The practitioner may be worried that the child has lost trust in them and may not go to them for support again in the future. They may also worry that the child will be abused even more because they have told somebody.
A parent may feel that by the practitioner giving details to social services, they have breached their confidentially and may remove the child from the setting. They may feel upset or angry that the child didn’t tell them first or that they were not the first to notice.
In a case where a parent/carer is the abuser, they may feel angry at the practitioner for telling somebody and will deny the accusations. They may be annoyed that the practitioner is taking the child’s word over their own.
