Children with high self esteem are those who have been told or shown by adults that they are loved and important in their own right. This leads the child to be confident in making their own decisions and mistakes without fear of punishment or ridicule. The child with high self esteem will not dwell on his/her mistakes and bounces back (is resilient) to try other things.

In child protection terms a child with low self esteem is more likely to be flattered by the attentions of a grooming paedophile and therefore fall prey to them.
A child with high self esteem is more likely to have the confidence to say no to anyone who tries to do something to them that they don't want them to do.

I once worked with a boy with low self esteem. He tried to be perfect at everything and if he made a mistake would become extremely upset. For example, if he was colouring in and went over a line, he would crumple up the paper and throw it away. He was reluctant to try anything new in case he failed at it.

Hope this helps, if not let me know and I'll try again
Cheers and good luck
Ann
