we use ringbinders, but many people prefer scrap books. I like the ring binder because I can put things in 'slippy pockets' in with artwork which may lose bits. We can also have things on the wall and then file in the rinbinder in the right place.
Why wouldn't it be ok to re-start, if you've thought of a better method?

We do observations, yes. We aim to do a minimum of one long obs every half term which we tie in to Laevers and the EYFS.
Throughout the session we do lots of mini obs and these are annotated against the EYFS criteria and dated, of course, and make a lovely anecdotal record to keep. The observations and EYFS annotations are not put into the child's folder until they leave.
The children's folders live in their trays and contain pictures they've done, WOWs from the wall, photographs of activities, bits they've brought in like tickets and feathers etc. Photographs from home of their family, pets, holidays and special events. All kinds of stuff!
