I should imagine this will go with their age - what they can understand (so keep it simple, not too long so that questions/instructions are confusing for them: and what type pf personality they have.

If they are fairly quiet or timid they may prefer to speak in a one-to-one situation, a confident child may not mind discussing/talking in group situations, out at the front of the class or being asked openly as they walk past - something a child who is still gaining/acquiring confidence would not want to do.

A SEN or EAL child may prefer to communicate visually with pictures or prompt cards or even use sign language. An EAL child may not understand English and as they learn would like to hear their own language, so I have always spoken to the parents/carers and written down key words/phrases to help with their transition into our setting.

Hi, I'd also look at body language and the way children communicate through actions: holding out arms, waving, smiling, eye conact, shaking & nodding their heads, sitting quiety, running, walking, verbal communication which can be words and vocabulary and also crying, screaming, whistling ..

Children also communicate through play - by being actively involved without adult encouragement or unnecessary direction helps to communicate they are positive about their participation and also communication through the use of interaction and their senses: taste, touch, hearing, sight, smell enables them to communicate likes/dislikes which helps you get to know them and the way in which each individual child prefers to communicate.

Visual aids & auditory aids such as pictures, written text, use of others & own vocabulary/words in connection with the senses of touch, taste & smell are all resources that help communication happen.

Hth xx
