staff ratios

I am currently off sick along with 2 other members of staff at a preschool and am concerned that the current preschool supervisor is not following ratios. I have been told that this week there was between 18 and 21 children aged 3 and 4 with only 2 staff, both lv 3, along with a student on placement. As i understand it, the student can't be counted. What do i do?

Well certainly doesn't sound right!! - need at least 3 with that amount.

However - and this depends on actual situation - if the student has been on long term placement, is over 18, and nearing the end of their qualification ..... given the situation- staff sickness - Ofsted may even have given permission in this instance.
Do you know the full/correct details or are you going on 'hearsay' - meaning if the student is really competent - maybe she has been taken on a 'unqualified bank-staff' to cover the fact the setting has 3 staff off sick.

I hope this reply hasn't come across 'snappy'!! it's just sometimes you have to look a the wider context of things, not just jump to the worst conclusions. If you are worried though it is a difficult one, is there some way you could talk to the supervisor to voice your concerns? But do it in a positive- not accusing way, expaining/suggesting she rings ofsted or her early years advisor for advice.

take-care of yourself too, don't go worrying so much you make yourself even iller.

if they arnt going by proper ratios then you have a right to be concerned as the children may not be getting adiquate care or supervision. you should note it down and keep a record and possibly talk to your supervisor. try to make sure you know for certain though if you are understaffed maybe suggest getting a supply play worker in. get well soon
