Stories week

Hey all,
this week our planning is based on stories - and our topic is meant to last 4 weeks!!!
Any ideas on activities with the theme of stories?
Ive got like puppets and role-play. etc

Would really love to go into work with a few 'wow' ideas. and would love for the children to do something abit different.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated!!

Think of the story first, then look at different learning areas and ways of presenting it such as :

The Gingerbread Man - this could lead on to cooking gingerbread men - if you don't have cooking facilities at your setting,
bring plain gingerbread men in for them to decorate with raisins, icing etc. You can have some plastic gingerbread cutters, rolling pins and trays with playdough.
As you said, provide puppets or even figures to go alongside a gingerbread man figure or puppet for story play.

On the mark making table, they can draw and colour their own or you can cut out cardboard gingerbread men for a gluing activity.
For roleplay you could have a bakery so they can bake gingerbread man etc
I'm certain if you go 'around your room' you could think of more.
It doesn't matter if children do their own thing, you are just providing the resources and offering the choice if they wish to take part in your theme.

'The Three little Pigs' - this could lead you to looking at pigs and other animals on farms, outdoor play - mud and wellies, you could talk about feelings etc - asking how they think those pigs felt being chased by a wolf etc and whatever else you think the children would be interested in and enjoy.
Painting -lots of brown paint ( with some glue in) then give them (or let them cut up) raffia as straw and cut out pigs (of various sizes) to place their pigs in mud. Some of our older children cut a pig or two out - but we had piles of different sized pigs cut from pink paper - the children just loved combining painting with adding their animals and 'straw' to it. We were told that real straw may have hygiene issues, so we decided to use a subsitute.

If they seem a bit tame how about the story 'The Princess and the Dragon' where you could go to town on the main characters and singing dragon/monster songs and then play some 'stomping' music to move and dance to, and 'dainty' classical ballet music for the princess.
Children could paint their own dragons/princess, make face masks or 'lollipop' masks to hold. This story is abour manners, bravery etc - so lots to talk about at circle time.
