Hi,

This TA support page from Wirral may help and also Deafnessresearch.org.uk

Strengths are that hearing impairement forces awareness, awareness of disability, of diversity, of discrimination, it demonstates how inclusive a setting's practice is - is hearing impairement welcomed in the setting, is it provided for, promoted through the resources available, it also enables specialists to focus on assisstive technology - ways that help providers and sufferers communicate, develop and learn.

Other strengths are that the UKs national screening process helps identify problems early enabling intervention/everyone to find solutions, treatments, recommendations.
Reaction to sounds checklist, hearing tests, childhood screening & sweep hearing test.

SaLT - speech and language therapy, Audiology and ENT - ear nose and throat specialsts are all strengths of the UK's health provision.

Getting to know makaton and Mr Tumble could be a strength ..
Being in a setting that knows how to promote the care of aids, implants and skin.
Being able to connect interested parties, groups, charities, organisations with each other.

Weakness is in the language and communication barrier hearing impairement presents and in the availability/access of resources to support hearing impairement.
Children/adults may not be able to communicate effectively with each other and with the environment - being unaware of exisiting or sudden risk, unable to hear warnings or guidance.

There may not be anyone in the setting who can communicate through sign language. Competent signers may need to be found, contacted, signing may need to be learnt by providers which involves time, enthusiasm, commitment, money.

Providing resources for inclusion, learning and development can be expensive. They can involve changes to the setting's environment - installing equipment, moving objects around, as well as a weakness in managing this, it's also an excellent strength.

Hearing impairement may cause frustration, saddness, loss of motivation, loss of interest, withdrawal, seclusion - all pretty negative emotions for well-being.

Music, rhythm and tempo may always be under review to better improve how everyone is able to interact and hear it.

Hearing plays a crucial role in a child’s early development
Source cks. The weakness this statement raises is that where loss of hearing is present providers need to have ways in place that ensures all children have the opportunity to develop at the same rate.

Hearing aids and BAHA
Hearing loops
Hearing dogs
Road crossing signals
Buzzer or vibrating alerts
Knowledge of infection - coughs & colds: glue ear & the impact this has on hearing.

Tinnitus causes of deafness

Hope this is what you're looking for, a happy new year to you too xx
