If children have a good relationship with the adults in their setting then they will feel valued and safe. If a child experiences a positive relationship with adults they are learning socially acceptable ways to behave. Over time trust may form between the child and the adult. This may give the child confidence to talk to other adults about issues that may be troubling them therefore creating a better atmosphere and a happier child.
Building positive relationships is about supporting other adults and children involved. In order to work together professionally there is a need to communicate effectively, be patient and accept that everyone has different opinions, views and experiences. Children are much more attentive when listened to and offered praise. Children like to please adults by showing their good behaviour.
Strategies you can use to encourage positive relationships:
Set a good example. If children see you arguing with other adults then they are going to think they can do it to.
Make sure that all the adults in the setting are aware of the importance of promoting positive relationships with the children.
Give children the opportunity to help you and other adults.
Praise children for good work and good behaviour.
Make children aware of the names of the other adults in the settings and tell them a bit about them, e.g. what class they teach in.
