Case Study – The importance of effective communication

You are a TA in a small school and are shared across several classes. This morning you have been asked to work one to one with a Y2 child because the usual TA is off sick. At playtime you go on duty and afterwards take your 10 minute break in the staffroom before returning to class. The teacher, who does not know you have been on duty, asks you where you have been. You are upset at the way you have been spoken to and tell the teacher you have been having coffee. However, the teacher misunderstands and thinks you are just late back from coffee. Both you and the teacher are unhappy and hardly speak to each other until lunchtime.

In your answer please explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships.

WHO IS IN THE WRONG?

How might this have been handled better?

How can this be resolved now?

Do you think the pupils will have noticed anything?
