Swahili Words

The name Kwanzaa comes from a phrase which means "first fruits" in Swahili

Here's some more:
asante (as-sahn-tay) = thank you
chakula (sha-koo-lah) = food
jambo (jahmbo) = hello
duka (doo-kuh) = shop
habari (hah-bah-ree) = how are you?
kwaheri (kwa-heh-ree) = goodbye
toto (toh-toh) = child
tafadali (tah-fah-dah-lee) = please

Kwanzaa mkeka mats

12''x18'' green, red & black paper cut into 1 1/2'' strips (you need 10)

The mkeke mat is a mat, usually made of straw and displayed on the family's table at Kwanzaa time.

Make this mat by paper weaving. When complete fringe the sides.
