K3D316: children’s self-esteem is precious: it allows them to be positive about themselves and to develop an inner confidence. The children who often have low self-esteem are those who present challenging and inappropriate behaviour. Their low self-esteem means that they crave attention, but the type of attention they receive may even contribute to their low selfwesteem. Attention seeking behaviours range from children being uncooperative through to destructive and aggressive actions. This type of behaviour must be addressed of coure, but it is important for adults to see it for what it is and to depersonalise it. Feeling frustrated and irritated with children is a normal reaction, but not at all hepful, as it can confirm to the children that they are not lovable and wanted. This is why it is important when addressing children’s behaviour to make sure that they understand that we are unhappy with the behaviour not with the child. Tackling attention-seeking behaviour is usually about giving children more attention. Spending more time with these children so that they learn how to get attention in positive and appropriate ways they show. Children often require sustained periods of positive adult attention so that they can change their self-concept and come to believe that they are good at being good. During this change over period, their behaviour can fluctuate, as they test out their self-concept. We must continue to give children positive feedback and to avoid coming to the conclusion that this strategy is not working.
