have you looked at the Health and Safety website, here is a link, it should give you an insite to completing a risk assessment. Does your setting not have risk assessments in place, if they do you should have seen them and had them explained to you for you to sign them.

Hi, one way to approach risk assessment is to look at it as a way of identifying who is, or who would be at risk - children/adults/the building/setting's professional reputation, what from and how to minimise or remove that risk altogether.

For duty of care issues and situations where risk assessment makes individuals and an environment safer, think of times where danger is present but balancing risk with an individual's right needs to happen ...

A 12 year old wants to watch a film with an age rating of 18
A 3 year old begins climbing onto a table, or has climbed the table and asks for help to jump off
A 2 year old approahes a set of concrete steps outside
A group of children show interest in using the fully functional wood working tools
An outdoor fire has been lit for making poporn
One of the children/young people recieves an abusive txt message

Each of these activities involves resources and personal choices that present a risk of harm and potential injury. Learning about risk and being involved with it is a necessity for discovering the type of boundaries that exist in life and for managing own safety, promote & support confident, self esteem and the ability to be resilient.

Duty of care is a professional expectation and legal obligation where you are required to think of, consider and plan to ensure the safety of the individual's in your care and colleagues around you.

Risk assessments are one way of doing this proactively ie. ahead of time so that a range of possibilities are taken into account before they happen and reactively where something negative has occured and practice needs to adapt to prevent it from happening again.

Start assessing risk by examining ..

• The activity - what is to happen or is happening?
• Resoures involved - could or are they hurting anyone?
• Who - identifying who could be harmed takes age and personal needs into account.
• Identify the type of harm eg. fall, choking, burn, drowning, poisoning, viewing inapporpriate material, becoming victim eg. to crime, abuse, bullying
• Mitigate/remove the risk - what can be done to make everyone safe
  • ensure suitably qualified adult supervision
  • check that items hold the CE safety mark
  • awareness of PEGI rated items
  • Know parents expectations and professional expectations
  • disuss conerns, agree ways to safeguard children whilst enabling opportunities to experience risk.
  • adapt the environment to support individuals
  • look for guidance and advice from outside agencies - police, CEOP, NSPCC, HSE, LA ..
