Hi a very warm welcome to the site.

Your setting will have policies and procedures in place that state how families and children are welcomed to the setting and how practitioners are expected to carry this out. This means it's important to understand the effect of discrimination on individuals (search for 'effect discrimination' inside this handbook & click to page 302). Not discriminating involves being aware of how language is used, for example; labels that stereotype, words that shame or cause distress. You work in a sector that supports and promotes children's development and the view that they have of themselves - self-identity, self-worth, self-confidence, self-awareness and having a sense of belonging.

Effects of discrimination include;
  • not being able to fulfill potential
  • finding it hard to form relationships
  • be affected by stereotypes or labels
  • feel shame
  • feel they are in someway to blame
  • lack confidence to try new activities
  • be aggressive towards others
Consider what you know about different cultures and how they're explored in your setting. What artifacts, books, toys and activities such as cooking, dressing up, music and festivals are celebrated. Think about what might happen if individuals were excluded instead of includeds and how damaging that would be to the family and to the local community, if the setting didn't give children equal access to these resources.

Page 410 of this EYE handbook explains
  • diversity as: the differences in values, attitudes, cultures, beliefs, skills and life experiences of each individual in any group.
  • Equality: allowing the same access for every child and family to full participation for all services.
  • Inclusion and inclusive practice: the process of ensuring the equality of learning opportunities for all children and young people.
Page 132 looks at how practitioners are required to work in ways that support diversity, equality and inclusion so that individual children's needs are met.

Hope this helps a little xx

On a similar topic i am trying to answer the question "explain how to raise awareness of diversity, equality and inclusion" and also "describe how to challenge discrimination in a way that promotes change". Any help or advice would be great so far I have written about training and regular staff updates and being a reflective practitioner and also about displays and parent newsletters raising awareness and haven't got far with the second question. Thanks, finding this Unit much more challenging as the questions i have are quite repetitive and trying to be specific in my answers.

Hi this thread looks at challenging discrimination http://www.silkysteps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13262

Ways to raise awareness also includes the events, festivals and activities your setting plans and its policies and procedures.

Best wishes xx

Hi a very happy New Year to you too :)
Using what you know about inclusive practice, respond to the criteria in a way that shows/demonstrates how each child's needs are met and their interests are supported.

What does your activity planning sheet look like? is there space to include ideas for individual children?

Do you plan activities for each child as their keyperson?

How do you take account of their interests and stage of development so you can plan next steps?

What resources do you have in the setting to make sure children have access to toys, books and games that enable them to explore diversity and culture - can you select dressing up clothes, mealtimes, books about different festivals and celebrations?

c)language used - do you use positive language when talking about culture, faith, belief, do you research words from topics that you're unfamiliar with?

d)cultural awareness - do you ask parents about the events children celebrate at home so that you can share them in the setting? This is one way to raise cultural awareness as you'll discover every family does things differently. From there you can plan ways to share those celebrations so that everyone can learn about them.

d)planning and carrying out physical care routines - how is this managed in your setting? Parents will have specific ways of caring for their child/ren at home and will expect this to be respected in the setting.

Nappy changing and toileting
Does your setting have dental care routines? toothbrushing
Children's different hair types
Skin care
Hand washing - sensitive soaps/creams for eczema?
Sun awareness

If you access to this handbook page 272+ is useful reading

Best wishes
