It depends on the chronic illness that they have/or had and how it affects them.
I have a sen child who has had chest/colds/weepy eyes and blocked nose all winter/early spring.
That child has missed many many sessions - he is not having any physical play going up the slide or even running around, so he is not learning or developing, but tucked up in bed -poorly.
When he does come back, he just isn't up to running about - he's not quite on par and never seems to get truly better in winter.
His parents tell us he has not had a decent night's sleep and you can see his physical growth is behind - he is much smaller than children of his own age.
As he gets older, they are hoping he will gradually get stronger and make it through the winter without serious health problems.
The child may have health problems because they were premature or because they were born with a condition or have gone onto develop a chronic illness.
Your first port of call will be the child's parents/ health visitor/portage worker/community nurse etc
Your Area Senco may well be involved with the setting and parents and they will help you a great deal.
