Its important to understand that not all parents will want to work in partnership with parents and some parents may even react in a negative manner, by not putting any pressure on them it could lead to them having a more positive attitude, parents who have more of a positive attitude will be more at ease to discuss their child’s development and progress, some carers will find it difficult to accept their Childs needs assessments that can identify possible learning difficulties, this can be helped by listening to any concerns the parent may have and offer plenty of support, reassurance and information and at the same time giving plenty of time for discussions, explain that their child will not be singled out and that they will be aware of any changes. Involve parents of the details of what they should expect and if their child is placed on a IEP (Individual education plan) that they can come off it at any time, make sure the parent/s are reassured that all information gained is strictly confidential. If the parent/s are still not happy then SENCO can offer advise and support to parents and staff. Parents will tend to accept it more if its about their child's learning rather than their child's behaviour, its really important to listen to what the parent/s have to say and try to explain that its in the best interest of the child and by giving plenty of advise and allowing time to answer any questions the parent/s may have, also explain that sometimes by getting outside agencies in too they can help give advise to staff and parents and the best ways to deal with the situation in order for their child to reach their full potential.
