Default Need help on health, safety and security hazards ...

Describe how to respond to the main health, safety and security hazards that may occur in play environments.

I am not sure what they want here, do I list what could happen, and what I would do about it, or am I saying that there are procedures in place, or do I say something about risk assessment? I really don't know how to answer! Doing my head in!

Hi, did the criteria before this one ask you to identify health, safety and security hazards in general and in your setting?

Consider next how you'd react to them if encountered.

eg. a health and safety risk would be spilled water on the floor maybe near handwashing facilities, a play-tray or craft table. To mitigate the hazard and make sure slips & falls were avoided what would you do?

The same for security, what risks have you already identified eg. children leaving the setting unseen, visitors to the setting entering without permission or checks?

There's good reading & images in the Preventing Injuries to Under 5s publication on gov.uk and your setting's Health & Safety, Safeguarding policy will also be useful.

Hope this helps a little xx

Thanks for your help. The one before this was Describe a playwork organisation's procedures before, during and after a session to maintain health, safety and security, including emergency procedures. So feel a little like I am repeating myself.

Ah ok, so the difference between the two is that this criteria is asking about your actual response now you've written about the policy & its procedures you need to describe your role and actions in response to those health, safety and security issues, before and after a session.

For example, do the procedures mention cleaning & tidying up? what is your role in that? what do you do when people arrive and then depart, what would you do if there was a missing child, fire drill?

Best wishes

I've been given about 17 questions and I never know whether I write enough. How long do you go on for? Do you just answer exactly what is required or fluff it up a bit?!!!

you need to make sure that only the points in the criteria are covered, how much that involves will probably depend on the person as everyone has their own unique way of explaining & describing xx Expanding too much can make it seem as though you're repeating yourself.

Your tutor should be able to advise you on any word count and provide you with the support you need.

Best wishes
