Hiya,

Children's skin and hair needs to be kept clean to prevent disease and the spread of infection. If they are not washed regularly, dead skin cells and bacteria on sweat cause an unpleasant smell, and sore areas develop on the skin and scalp.

A daily bath, shower or wash should be undertaken except with some skin conditions where a child for example with eczema may only be able to be bathed every other day to prevent the skin drying out and becoming sore.

Washing hair two or three times or more frequently if families prefer. Shampoo should be thoroughly rinsed out with clean water

Hands should be washed after toileting and messy play as well as before eating or touching food.

Sun creams (sun block, high factor sun creams) should be applied to the skin (according to directions and parental consent). Children should also wear a hat that covers the back of the neck. Sun damages skin so it is important to protect the child/children.

It is important for practitioners to be aware of children's individual care needs. Children will require different care depending on their skin colour or type and the type of hair texture. For instance:

It is important to note that all skin types needs to be protected from the sun. It is sometimes thought that black skin does not need protection, but this is not the case.

Dry skin needs to be moisturised with lotions or oils. These may be massaged in or added into bath water. Black skin may have a tendency to be dry.

Very curly hair or thick hair that is difficult to comb out may need to be treated with conditioners after shampooing. A wide-tooth comb with rounded ends should be used for combing out.

Curly glack hair may need to be treated daily with oil that is massaged in. This prevents dryness and reduces breakage of the hair shaft, again a wide-tooth comb should be used and care must be taken.

Hope this gives you a few ideas, gud luk
