Playing and modelling
Children can learn how to socialise with others when adults join them in play. This is a key way in which babies and toddlers learn about turn taking and also responding to others. Older children can learn to play games that require rules, such as picture lotto, by playing them with an adult. When adults play with children, they can also show children how to share materials and resources and also cope when their idea is not accepted by others.
Acknowledgement
Early years practitioners can help children by acknowledging when they are being cooperative. This will help children recognise that this is a valued skill. They may notice children playing well together and ask them whether they are enjoying themselves.
Planning play opportunities
Some play opportunities wiull help children developp the skills of socialisation. On tof the roles of the early years practitioner is to plan opportunities that are stage appropriate but that will help chi;ldren play alongside or with each other. With babies and toddlers, this might mean putting out resources which will help children to play near each other, while with older children this might mean adult-led activities where children play in teams - for example, obstacle races or making dens.
