Support will be given in the first instance in-house to help a child with English as a second language, through visual clues and gestures. We will also attempt to learn a few basic words in the child’s home language.
We will give the child time to become familiar with the new surroundings before requesting further support if needed.
In the first instance we would contact our link teacher, who would be able to contact a county interpreter to give us further guidance and to meet the child.
We may also need to contact EMTAG/METAS for support.
We may ask parents if they would like to spend some time in the setting, this will familiarise the child and give them confidence to join in.
We would have some posters of basic words like toilet, home time, drink etc in the child’s home language.
Parents could also be encouraged to attend one of our courses for EAL to help support their child.
We could also gain the support of LAP to help the child in a smaller group.
