Hi,
I have just read your question about how an activity can impact on intellectual and language development. I think that this is referring to a holistic approach, its when children develop in more than one area from a particular activity. This approach could be applied to any activity if well planned to be honest.
Some example's of this would be playing hide and seek with objects under a piece of fabric. If you ask the child to remember 4 objects (age dependent of course) and remove one, we are encouraging the child to problem solve by thinking and using cognitive processes to understand what is missing and we are supporting the child to extend and use language and vocabulary such as new words or contexts.
Another example may be painting. You could ask the child open questions like what are you painting? By doing this you are initiating conversation which extends language development and you are also finding out how the child is expressing their imagination or intellect. Hollistic learning is wonderful and it really can be applied to any activity when used effectively. I hope this helps clarify things. Good luck!!!!

hi bfc,
Once you are able to find out the child's interests you can use those to introduce into other activities or areas of learning. If I have a child who loves dinosaurs but may not like crafts say, i would suggest activities such as painting dinosaurs or maybe a dinosaur land. When you introduce interests into activities, children engage more. Role play is great for building confidence, if a child likes pirates but is shy, you could build on this interest by playing pirate ships. In my experience this usually helps them develop further skills and abilities.
I hope this is somewhat useful and good luck!!!
