in my college and certainly in all the FE colleges i work with you need a level 2 first (* this is essential as the work is based on a huge amount of pre knowledge, you wouldn't do a physics a level without a gcse) but yes you can be a volunteer BUT you need to have placement where you can observe asses and plan and be an active member of the team otherwise you won't generate evidence. an apprenticeship is a type of training and many colleges are offering them in childcare but again starting at level 2

I am doing my level 3 diploma. The only experience i had was 20 years ago when i did a 2 year caring course. I started volunteering in October last year and the manager there was happy to put me through to do this level. I needed 3months placement before course started. I started my level 3 course in Jan this year and my assessor thinks i should finish by end of July.

The criteria for me to get on my level 3 was 2 years experience and paid employment full time.
