Help SOS help! stuck on poison question

Hi i am doing level 2 CYPW. I'm currently doing the recognising & responding to illness task. Im stuck on Wherecould you get information that would tell you how to deal with each type of poison that might harm a child? The info in the book is limited and when i search the internet websites ive come across are for nhs frontline staff.

Any ideas gratefully received

Thanks :-)

Hi, a warm welcome to silkysteps.

This page on Ireland's HSE website is good reading for poisoning:
http://www.hse.ie/eng/health/az/P/Po...poisoning.html information has been adapted from NHS.uk

The 9th St. John ambulance First Aid handbook pg 207 states types of poisoning as: swallowed - absorbed - inhaled - splashed in the eye - injected through the skin.

Chemicals - eg. that are found in cleaners, pesticides, solvents
Medicines and drugs
Alcohol
Food
Carbon monoxide
Snake bites
Plants and berries

All handling, storage and reporting procedures of products that contain dangerous substances fall within COSHH guidelines. http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/basics/substance.htm

'This requires employers to keep a record of substances that could be hazardous to health, where they will be kept, how they will be used and for what purpose, as well as what to do if they contact skin, eyes or are ingested. In a nursery setting, this mainly applies to cleaning chemicals and those used for general maintenance' source page 6 safe early years environments pla.org.uk

You would find information about different types of poison from ...
  • Your setting's policies and procedures
  • Managing medicines - EYFS framework
  • nhsdirect.uk
  • hse.org.uk
  • Your local authority environmental health department
  • Plants - RHS has valuable information & guidance for identifying risky plants/flowers and berries
  • Current uptodate first aid guidance from eg. nhs.uk, handbooks, local GP
Hth, enjoy the site xx
