Hiya,
You do have colleagues even if they aren't travelling with you - colleagues can be others who share the same role, even if independantly - they can be stationed continually within an office or travel part time / full time. They can be those who have an interest in what you are doing, stakeholders that may share an accountability with you, for what you do and the way you do it, management / leaders that work as a team and can provide answers to questions are all part of a network that support and provide you with what you need to do the job well, for everyone involved.
It would depend on your role and who is employing you but for travelling you would need to know the lines of contact - who your first point of contact is, their department and for which situation, how you reach them, by which preferred method - as you mention mobile, email, txt ... and what to do if they cannot be contacted.
If an emergency who to ask for advice or assistance - if contacting police, fire, ambulance is appropriate or another named organisations. How you would use local services and places to stay in touch if you find yourself unable to use the phone / internet and the need to speak is of a priority .. confidentiality would be a consideration if using public places for communicating.
Manager, lead, Ofsted, CIS - EYs, council, Police, doctors surgery, clinic, health visitor, speech & occupational therapists, school, hospital, library, benefits and job advice, shops ..
Travelling would mean that meetings and a space in your place of employment to organise information sharing and administation is important. Office based would usually mean there is an assigned place already associated with the role/job title - desk & chair, filing cabinet.
Depending on the reasons for travelling, case information, appointments, map, other agencies involved, ID cards, resources are all good in a travel ready format! Laptop bag, briefcase, lanyard, where confidential information goes with you, ways of securing it and ensuring it stays safe. Dress code, uniform & any other expected ways of presenting yourself.
Other travel based problems could be your transport - breakdowns, petrol/diesel .. if your own transport, logging mileage and knowing what allowances can be claimed for - office based would probably not have the same travel allowances attached to the wage.
It's very individual and each reason for a visit/being on the road would possibly involve a completely different set of protocols.
Travel can make you more aware of isolation, office can provide the immediate reassurance of those around you but methods of authorisation & informing may well be the same..
Hope it helps a little
xx
