Hi a warm welcome to the site.

Age and stage appropriate means the games are made for a specific group of children so that the activities are understandable, enjoyable, not too easy, not too difficult or challenging and support their development so they make progress towards being able to play games independently and cooperatively. If you check the back of the board game boxes in your setting it'll have information about recommended players ages, maximum numbers and maybe what they rules ar eso you can see what the children benefit from should they play!

Page 138 of this level 2 Cache CYPW handbook explains the ages and stages

4-5 years old/ are able to share and take turns but often need help
5-6/ can cooperate in group play but are not yet ready for team games
6-8/ can play games with rules
8-12/ enjoy playing and inventing games with rules

To research the role and importance of games with rules page 170 of this level 2 handbook will help - use the 'look inside' feature then search inside the book for 'games with rules'

Games with rules help children to work out social situations, negotiating with their friends to work out what needs to be done.

Rules offer an organised structured form of play, helping children's understanding of order and sequence.

*Games with rules: The Nature of Children's Play

Depending which age group you work with think about the different types of games the setting has. They'll be activities that involve dice, timers, spinners, turn taking, sorting and matching where children are thinking about what they need to do eg. separating the red crayons from the yellow and blue. Games with dice or timers.

Table top games you could review maybe a puzzle, card games, board games eg. lotto, playdough games (promotional plug there sorry!) matching & sorting, memory games

Hope this helps a little

I have a question I got this back

Thank you for your assignment, you have started off well however you just need to change question 4.3.

Question 4.3. you need to write about how your planned activity in 4.2 enhances children's learning development such as...
How does it enhance learning and advance cognitive development
Collecting experiences
helps develop communication skills and vocabulary
can build knowledge of problem solving

Hi, thinking about the activity you did with the children:

1. cognitive development: what learning do you think they got from the activity? sharing, turn taking, cooperating in a group, numbers, colour names?

2. what sort of experience was the activity, was it positive and the children enjoyed it by staying to complete the activity, were they happy, smiling, talking and taking part? or maybe it was not a very positive experience eg. children came to the activity, watched what was happening and then left.

3. what language did you use with the children to help them understand the activity - open ended questions that develop communication skills usually start with the words how, what, where, why, tell me. What specific words were used that linked to the activity eg. jigsaw, puzzle, words about the Jigsaw's pictures, fit, turn, same, different. and what language di the children use during the activity - did they talk to you, each other, no one?

4. what problem solving happened in the activity? was it jigsaws where children learnt to pick up a shape, match it to an identical place on the jigsaw board and then fit it in correctly? Was it junk modelling activity and children problem solved by joining pieces together so they didn't fall apart?

Hope this helps a little xx

Hi, along with the bookshelf in your setting and the information you'll find on the back of each book cover, amazon can also help with this!

Authors write books aimed at specific age group and this usually guides how much text is included in the book, what size and how many pictures appear in it, the complexity of the message the author wants to share with the reader, how detailed to story is and which words and language is used.

For example you would probably buy board books, bath and cloth style books for very young children who enjoy the colours, texture, page turning and chewing them!

Toddler, preschool books can be paper or hardbacked, large informative pictures tend to be the main focus with simple words and sentences accompanying them.

In reception keystage 1 (if you work in england) books feature an increasing amount of text as children's reading skills develop. Gradually text takes over from pictures and stories become more intricate.

If you use the books in your placement you'll be able to see which books are age and stage appropriate for you children's needs.

Best wishes

I have a question

Describe criteria you could refer to when choosing books for young children
This is what I put
0-3 years
All children love books so it is important to give the child books that are suitable for their age so they gain something from them very young children should not have paper page books as they can become spoiled quickly children do put books in their mouths so choose books that have cardboard pages and pictures and bright illustration which are appealing to the eye they are good for this age group feely books which use texture and song are good for this age other good books are wordless books they stimulate children both visually and mentally and encourage them to create their own stories
3-5 years
Children between this age start to understand the meaning of books and recognise the words and pictures it is important to provide books that are visually inspiring as children of this age will not have learned how to read books that use rhyming phrases and books that ask the child question books that encourage the child to do things and find out about what these are and look like.

And I need to add
Age
Stage of development
Their interests
Disability

Can anyone help
