General question K2d22

Hi, could anyone provide some guidance for K2D22: How to adapt the environment to ensure safety for children, according to their age, needs and abilities. I have already done the bit about taking into account disabilities or special educational needs. Thank you x

Hi Jessica,
What bit are you looking for then?
Have you remembered the safety aspect?

such as perhaps ( as I have done) moving locks on the inside of the toilets to adult height so children can't lock themselves in.

making sure if you have glass panel doors either replacing them with wooden ones or using safety glass if light is needed.

using table corner protectors so children don't catch their heads, door 'sponges' to prevent trapped fingers and socket covers.

Making sure that children can't access rooms - i.e. the kitchen - if there isn't a lock, a bolt at the top of the door keeps children out.

Making sure the toys and equipment are adapted to children's ages, needs and abilities i.e. tables - 2 year olds will need shorter tables than 4 year olds. Younger smaller children trying to get on chairs that are too high to sit at tables that are too high can cause accidents.

Try and go around your setting in your mind and see where you have adapted it or where you could make it safer by adapting.

Don't forget to think of how you could adapt the outside play area.

I hope this helps a little.

Thank you very much Heidi, I am abit unsure of the question but I think I just need to write about how I can adapt the environment to make sure children are safe and taking into account their age, needs and abilities. I can now do this with your help . I am trying to get Unit 202 completed before monday and have nearly finished just got a couple more of knowledge evidence to do x

Sometimes, it's easier to turn the question around and put an easier one in your head. It might be easier to think of

'is everything safe where the children are/ going to go/or play with/or use?

Do I need to change/adapt/mend or replace anything to make it safe?

Then you might think '..actually that pram the children use has rather a long bolt on which they could hurt themselves on' and then you'd see to it probably by sawing it to the correct length or replacing it with a smaller bolt.

I hope your unit is going well.

When i did this module i actually got down on my knees to see what the room looked like from a child's height. Where was their work displayed? Could they move easily around the room? Were toys and activities looking attractive at that height? Were there any dangers at this height I may have missed? Then of course you may have to adapt that for crawling babies and children that are just walking ?
