SOS unit 3.13 a.c. 1.2 1.3 - analyse the impact of biological and eniviromental factors on childrens development

I have had unit 3.13 back and passed everything except a.c. 1.2 and 1.3

my tutor has asked me to expand on the short and long term impact of child development. I have copied and pasted what I have written below, but a bit lost as expanding. Does it mean including things like why are the reasons, such as poverty, asylum seekers having poor diets as dietary needs not met etc, and the long term would be lower achieving and not stimulating etc?

Biological means a variety of ways that nature plays a role in effecting a child’s natural development. Many factors can impact on the level of support a child may need, and quite possibly involve genetic causes which is where a faulty gene leads to a condition which causes the child to develop at a different stage for example - something goes wrong when the foetus is growing in the womb, or a child is deprived of oxygen at birth can cause some brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Environmental is how a child is shaped in life both positively and negatively by factors such as society, lifestyle, and parenting. The external factors are when a child contracts an illness, accidents, life experiences, lifestyle choices and social disadvantage. Developmental factors include rubella, meningitis, toxoplasmosis, mental illness in parents, poor housing, long term unemployment, poor social skills, and coming from a family on benefits.

Both biological and emotional factors can impact a child’s development, I have listed them as both short term and long term implications;

Short-term needs:
• illness or injury requiring hospitalisation
• temporary hearing impairment
• being bullied or is bullying although this is more seen at school age
• home life is disrupted by poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse, under the care of social services, alcohol, drug abuse, parental mental or physical health problems.
• being new to the country
• not speaking English
• having specific dietary needs
• being highly gifted and the level of challenge being offered specific reading and writing problems
• bereavement

Long-term needs
• disability caused by a genetic/chromosomal defect e.g. Down's syndrome
• physical difficulty with movement e.g. cerebral palsy
• a visual or hearing impairment
• a specific language disorder
• learning or attention difficulties such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD
It is common knowledge to any parent that a child who has a delay in one area due to any of the factors listed above can consequently cause them to become delayed in other areas of a child’s development. It is imperative that all health professionals whether it be midwifes testing a baby’s hearing after birth, to a health visitor completing a two-year check to preschool and school workers observing and assessing children that we can pick up on delayed development and refer children who we suspect to have additional needs to the relevant departments. For example, a four-year-old in our setting is meeting all the criteria except for social as she is reluctant to join in and play with other children but we believe this is due to her lack of speech and has been referred to a speech therapist which in turn will build her confidence to play and communicate with her friends before she reaches school age.

Hi, expand on each one of the short & long term needs that you've listed as bullet points by explaining why it might impact on a child's development eg. for illness or injury requiring hospitalisation what would that mean for a child who attends a day nursery/preschool or childminder and all the opportunities for physical play and learning that would otherwise be available to them?

Pages 347 of this level 3 handbook? explores the factors in greater detail.
