As far as stereotypes go...children need to understand that everyone is different and they can learn this by learning about different cultures and types of families. They need to learn that all cultures and races etc need to be treated with respect, and that their views and lifestyle will be respected by others. Any stereotyping should be sensitively challenged, so that if, for example, a boy says 'all girls like dolls' you should ask them why they think that and encourage them to explore their ideas.
Adults should also be very careful not to stereotype and be a poor role model. Any challenges should be tactful, as stereotyped opinions may often begin at home.
