Hiya, if you have a wander through some of the pages on cf trust website you'll be able to collect information that you can translate personally and use in your own way www.cftrust.org.uk and about cystic fibrosis

The cross infection information is enough to panic the hardiest.

With the ok from health professionals hygiene practices are a huge consideration for intervening & minimising the risk of infection to CF suffers through skin contact, body fluids, toy & resource contamination Cystic fibrosis from CKS

The two strains of baceria named in the CKS leaflet link cause the greatest risk of infection - found in human/animal contaminated soil & water and also as above from infected to non infected sufferer.

This is a very useful thread on the CF trust forum - Water butts preschool a great example of how a setting has the opportunity to work in partnership with parent/carers & still provide great activities for the children.

The cystic fibrosis and you booklet is aimed at 8 - 10 year olds, was published back in 2000 - it has clarity of the information, apart from rights that anyone could use.

Airway clearance techniques is also an excellent idea generator

In short I summarise cf to be about mucus, digestion and the lungs.

The heel prick performed during a newborn baby's screening process is used to the test for cystic fibrosis amongst other conditions and is part of a nationwide programme - newbornbloodspot.screening.nhs.uk

For early years - preschool & kindie, a settings general activities should all challenge/be available to children & staff regardless. You may have more careful considerations towards eating, breathlessness, mucal buildup and recommendations given by child/children/parents/physiotherapists/professionals ..

You could be dealing with or needing information on:

Coughing
Disposal of phlem - sputum
Susceptibility to infection
Hygiene practices & routines
Cleaning products
Avoiding dusty areas
Avoiding smoky places
Intake / release of salt
Intake of fluids
Intake of foods
Possible administation of digestive enzymes for fat & protein foods/snack & antibiotics.
Remembering to always check/ask if a child needs to spit out.
Postural drainage positions
Pancreas function - enzymes & insulin link is to Leeds teaching hospital.nhs.uk
Water supply and its treatment process.
Potentially contaminated soil & sand play areas.
Other CF sufferers in the building
Cipro - antibiotic treatment & possible light sensitivitiy - UV & sunburn

Each child is very individual so as always what will be enjoyed by one another will not

Activity ideas that can be used to focus on exercising airways & lungs:
  • Wii console for interactivity rather than sedantry console gaming
  • Dance mats
  • karaoke & microphones
  • Windmills
  • Mirror & window steaming .. excellent if a person can be located on both sides ..
  • Interactive/low wind chimes & duster stick/blowing
  • Bubbles - wand bubbles and larger activity by making bubbles in the water tray/bath - scooping and blowing.
  • Cooling down hot imaginary food by blowing in home corner role play.
  • Flutes, trumpets, warblers, party blowers - all these may need to be disposable, individual/named or be able to undergo cleaning processes for cross infection/contamination.
  • Blow football with large chunky drinking straws - again disposable/or can be cleaned straws.
  • Upright star posture & arms stretch - cloud grabbing, a clap & hoorah/yayy for each one caught - at the end of the activity ask everyone to clap out and horray for each cloud they caught .. precision aside
  • Bottom shuffle monsters - play on a carpet or floor area and use a beach ball for toss & catch and rolled/floor bound tennis balls for motivating movement - if wanted include head bands with monster features attached ears/horns/spades..
  • Huff and puff dragons - role play breathing exercises, capes for wings.
  • Sit n rides
  • Bridges & steps ..
  • Climbing frames
  • running & swimming - check on chlorination so water is clean.
Sleeping lion cubs - leaf blow
Set the scene and story:
Invite the children to lay down, arms outstretched and designate the job of leaf holder - resource needed: a leaf/tissue paper tied to a cotton thread on a handle.
Sleepy lion cubs all want to rest as they've had a busy prowling growling roaring day. But what is this green floaty leaf doing landing on the sleepy cubs noses?
Can each child blow strongly and gently or gently and strongly - deeply / slowly at the leaf and float it back into the air - onto the next sleepy cubs nose.

If the setting has avaible resources/fund look maybe look at providing postural/slanted surfaces for drainage - for the game above the tilt could be rocks on the lion cubs plain.

Airway clearance from California's Cystic fibrosis education

Chuffing tigers are good for huffs & puffs - Tigers chuff to say hello & lurvve the lurve lol you tube video

A good read from Indiana USA's rileychildrenshospital.com exercising with cystic fibrosis

June 2006 article on BBC news - Lungs for life

I hope this helps a little
