General question Interview activities ?

Were you asked to prepare and undertake an activity with the Children as part of your job interview ?

How did it go and what did you choose to do ?

as an interviewer I have asked to see a planned activity of their chosing (i would give a simple theme ie.autumn) and I look for things such as clear differentiation and suitability, but for me I not totally sure it's fair to expect a complete stranger to interact well without at least some prior knowegde of the children. I would however ask a candiate to come in for a session - then observe how they interact naturally with the children and staff on a more relaxed basis, and to be able to see if they use iniative etc

as a childminder I have never heard of this, but what a fab idea! it really would help you see just how the person would interact with the children in the setting

I had to do this for one of my interviews!

I found it very difficult as information prior to interview was not that clear as to what they wanted.

I was asked to plan an activity for a group of children (approx 6 to 8 children) average age 2 years, the session ran for 2.5hours, we would be in a hall and the parents would be on a training session behind room dividers!

Wasn't sure if they just wanted a one off activity or whole session planned so
I planned the whole session and highlighted the main activity (finger painting). I based my session around Brown Bear book, ie: magnetic story so children could easily interact, finger painting animals in book, role play/dressing up animals. Sit'n'rides for physical play, plus construction etc., doted around the room for free play.

Didn't get the job which was Ok as it turned out that they were looking for a creche leader not a preschool leader. Even the job advert was unclear! lol.

Default interview

in my first job i was asked what activities i could with a croup of children, if all i had to work with was one completely empty room?

I have had an interview where i have had to plan an activity if they ask you to do this make sure you know exactly what they expect ie does it have to be a craft activity or would a game or something be ok. i wasn't told when i went for my interview that as well as my preperation of cutting out the starts for my fairy wands and buying the sticks to make the actual wand, where i went actually expected me to come with the glue and glitter to go on them. I didnt get the job and actually had a lucky escape as the place closed down a year later when a child escaped and was found half a mile down the road. thankfully i did get an ace job though and am still working with children so the interview didnt put me off.
