If you think of it in teams of 'growth and development' then you can link it to various theories- as physical development is also linked to 'growth and maturation' meaning a child needs to acquire certain skills in order to develop.

An example given in Heinmans CCLD NVQ book - Toliet training - 'this is a skill, but the brain has to be mature enough to be able to send signals to and from the bladder pg 134.

What about Tina Bruce and her books on play - there must be something relating to Physical play
