Tried most 'remedies'..... I found vinegar made them softer, baking them made them brittle and coating them in olive oil and salt then baking them just made the conkers stink!
My son used to soak them in Vinegar too, i think that it must make them softer surely?
When you bake them do they blow up like chestnuts do? The splattered oven effect is not good.

No they didn't explode, I did wonder if they might if baked in the microwave though ... oven cleaning isn't a favourite job so was careful to make the cord hole beforehand so that the pressure could escape !
I must have missed piercing one of the chestnuts then I think most things seem to explode in the microwave, awww splattered microwaved eggs adhere to the entire inside and have to be scraped off - never ever buy a microwave egg poacher
