Outdoor Sandpits ?

What are your experiences with outdoor sandpits ?

Do you take a tray outside when it's nice or use a permanent sand area ..

I've just changed what I do - I used to have a sandpit with buckets and spades inside and a lid - but the lid kept being left off, the children tipped it all over the place, it got sand flies and I kept having to replace the sand..... sooooo, just bought a new bag and I'll put it in the play tray so I expect to throw it away each time it gets used
