a. facilities and equipment
- all equipment checked for broken parts and sharp edges,
- large pieces of equipment and toys arranged to allow safe use by children,
- electrical sockets covered,
- cupboards at “child’s level” should not contain dangerous items: knives, tools, cleaning items,
- toys with small parts kept away from children under 3 years old,
- outdoor slides, swings clean, dry and safe,
- sandpit covered when not in use,
- doors (entrance, exit) and gates not be capable of being opened by children,
- equipment used correctly.

b. toilet and washing areas
- all facilities clean and supplied with toilet paper and soap,
- dangerous item (bleach and other chemicals) not accessible to children,
- facilities to deal with spillages of urine, faeces, blood and vomit available,
- toilets and baby changing area cleaned and checked regularly.

c. movement and activity of children
- no loose rugs or pieces of carpet on the floor,
- ensure children have the space to move freely without bumping into other children or objects,
- outdoor area free from harmful waste such as dog faeces, broken equipment, glass litter,
- surfaces are soft and safe.
