Hi everybody!
I'm trying to think of ideas of how to invlove children in the planning and preperation of snacks, at the same time introducing interesting food and drink. My assessor has asked me link this to a story - I've checked our Nursery planning and the story will be Polar bear, polar bear???? Can't think of another story to link it to - our Nursey only provides fruit or vegetables for snacktime - please help!! Has anybody got any ideas!
Thanks in advance!

Why not use Handa's Surprise ??

You only need various different fruits, it uses some unusual fruits like passion fruit and guava, but also everyday fruits like bananas and tangerines.

You could get the children to help peel the tangerines (start them off if necessary) and segment them and peel and chop bananas. They could make a fruit cocktail or fruit smoothies.

Handa's Surprise is a good one because it is multicultural and you could expand the theme by making multi cultural displays and then it could be linked to other units.

I used this book in one of my units; I did it as a circle time activity by reading a large story book and at the same time passing the fruits arounds for the children to feel. We then expanded this by taking small groups and looking inside the fruits and tasting them. We then made a touchy feely display in the corridor and translated the names of the animals and fruits into all the different home languages of the children in the setting.
