The foundation degree is similiar to nvq's except that they rely on you to be more academic in your assignments. They take you to level 4/5 when completed and if you do the BA Hons degree, another 1/2/years after the fd,if you want a qts status to level 5/6. I am doing mine at Southampton University and it is on a Tuesday from 1.15pm until 7.15pm. I have 2 tutors and they cover different aspects for working with children. The assignments are usually 1500 words each unit and you are expected to do research and reading on each subject to a high academic level. We have to pass level 1 to finish level 2. It is a lot of work and sometimes feels like it takes over your life but it is doable and very enjoyable. You can receive a bursary if you work in a setting for early years. They pay so much each year towards the costs and you can also get funding through school settings - you would have to ask your particular school to look into it. I think you have to have certain qualifications to be accepted - at least nvq3 i believe, but again ask your local universities.
