Our fire proccedure is
Deputy manager to line up and take children out onto the front field
Manager stays behind to collect register, mobile phone, children's records, check toilets and close classroom windows and doors then meet children on field and call register.

This applies to bomb scare only difference is we meet on the field of the school at the end of the road- guess this would apply to gas leak too.

Hope that helps

In my pre-school setting, each member of staff has a job. Supervisor takes phone, register, visitors book, someone else has portable first aid kit, accident book, change of clothes (kiddies that is), someone else checks hall, someone else checks toilets. While checks going on children line up and hold onto ropes ready to go out. We leave the building open and have an assembly point which is described in our policies (as is evacuation procedure - so that may be a good place to look for info). We check that all children, staff and visitors are there by calling out names. When we return on our drills, we count the children back in!

I think these procedures apply are in the event of a fire but it is an interesting point as to whether we should be considering other emergencies. Presumbly evacuation would be similar.

evacuation procedure should be easy and understandable to all, nothing to delay leaving the building,or endangering anyone.. so will be different for every setting.. but cannot see why any different for other emergencies.. ours was same for all evacuations when I ran a forces group in troubled times.. hated going in to find someone had left something outside.. first check every day was outside the building.. then all happened.. unable to go near.. call guard room.. wait for guard to come down and once bomb disposal! I still hate seeing a bag on a doorstep and sometimes find myself checking the car!

also .. while thinking of this..
what do you do if you cannot return to the building..
where do you have as a safe haven for children while trying to contact parents..
where / what do you do if you cannot contact a parent or go back into the building...

we have all eventualities listed and a local school (with a written letter telling us so) willing to allow us room .. where do you all go?

All these need thinking about.. its not just evacuation but safety of children after as well.

We also have access with local school. I think we keep trying to contact parents until end of session time and then would follow our procedures if a child is not picked up.
